What I made today~

Well, it's only taken two years to get back to this idea. I saw this in a friends book all about the nine patch. Fell in love with those tiny squares in the middle. Love how they just float there. So; I had just moved into the master bedroom; painted it; put up drapes, decorated it and wanted something for the bed. Cut all these as 2 1/2 strips two years ago; made 21 blocks & when they all turned out the wrong size I put it all away. The strips all hung on a pants hangar in the closet. There were LOTS of strips. There are still LOTS of strips left over but I'm not making this any bigger. Right now it will finish at 54" x 54". (Can you hear me say 'HOLY CRAP'! not another big one!) Anyhow; here are the blocks I made today; I'll start sewing rows tomorrow.

Would love to hear ideas for a border if necessary & binding.

  1. I love this one. I just realized I have not visited here in awhile. I'll add it to my iGoogle page so I don't miss stuff.

    Love the sketch book!

I wouldn't sash. I might border with something narrow just to contain it, but not much. The binding might even be enough.

I love the colors, and I too love the floating center squares.

    One of two border choices:
    1) the deeper green, I like this because it would frame the whole piece; or
    2) one of the prints, if you chose this one then I'd use the deeper green as the binding.

    Happy Quilting!

I would sash it in the dark green print if you have enough. I like "frames."
You'll just have to audition it and walk around it for a few days to see if you like it.

  5. I'd select a colour from the range in the prints you used, and plan a thin binding, forget a border, and spend the time and fabric you would have spent hassling with all that on making some more blocks. Make it a larger, more generous size that you or someone else could wrap themselves in and snuggle down into. It's going to be a lovely quilt, one of my fav. patterns although I've mever mad one myself.

I agree with Alison. Small binding, no border, no sashing. But your resources, time and money, into something you love working on. I do like this design. Also agree that it would not take that much effort to get in some more blocks that would make it a little bit bigger for someone to snuggle under.

    Whatever you decide, have fun!

  7. That's a lovely, little quilt. You say you have more of the strips, so make it bigger. It'll be worth it!

  10. Thank you all for your thoughtful & kind comments. It seems the general consensus is to add more squares. Oh well; I might as well (I'm impatient and want to be done) considering I have all the extra strips cut. I agree that if a border (maybe just a 2" one) is put on at all it will be dark green and I'll do the binding same color as border giving a total of a 3" strip of dark green to fence in all those squares. I'll post pictures when I get it done! Thank you all so much!
