Do It Quick

I remember a saying

"If you have to swallow frogs, do it quick"

It is with a horrendously heavy heart that I must tell you our dear Elliott is gone.

At this time I must suffice this entry to say that last evening I went to bed and bid The Gurl to lock up when she went to bed.

She did not.

Sometime between her going to bed and this morning, Elliot seeing his chance,
pawed and pawed at the screen door (that was not denied him by the sliding glass door that was to have been closed) until it opened.*

This morning when he was not begging for breakfast at my bedroom door I grew concerned.  I looked throughout the house and discovered the slider open.  All the other cats had remained inside curiously enough.

We searched all over this morning in the time we had,  but as weekday mornings go it was hectic so we eventually had to give up and get ready for work/school.

The Gurl returned from her first class a few hours later and resumed the search but further afield.  She came across his collar and what remained of his gorgeous tail across the street.

I was still at work when she called me sobbing.  She told me what happened and that she buried his tail in backyard under one of the trees.  He was her very favorite and I greive for her and Oliver who is alone now.

 R.I.P. Sweet Boy Elliott

You will be greatly missed.

*I would like to add here that he has done this since he was a kitten, long before he was ever permited short excursions outside with us in the backyard on sunny days*

  1. Oh, such a sad sad thing to have happened. You must both be heartsick. We loved hearing the stories of that sweet orinj boy, and grew to love him as much as one can a kitty one has only met on the computer screen. Your stories entranced us. Please know our thoughts and purrs are with you.

  21. We are so, so, so, so sorry for your loss. What a sweet boy Elliott looked like...what a face! Surely he was a wonderful boy that will be sorely missed. Just as you say good-bye to your Elliott, I will soon be saying 'hello' to mine - Elioth - he has come to replace our lost boy Lolo who left us in January. So, if there is any solace we can offer you, soon an Elioth/Elliott will have a new life. And I can tell you that your Elliott is not gone...he will always be with you in your heart and he will talk to you. Just as my Lolo/Lautrec does. If that is any solace. We send you purrs and licks...Tiny, Ellwood and Ginger (and Mom Cat) from Weezdabadcats and Dameedawgs

  47. They depend upon us, to protect them and we try our best, but mistakes can happen and we know you are filled with grief and regret. My cats pushed open a screen door I didn't latch properly once when I lived in Oregon and there were some coonhounds just down the alley way...I was terrified but got 3 friends to help me look for them and within 30 minutes we had all five safe and sound again...but it could have gone very differently.

We know you live in an area with coyotes and know you have had this sad experience before...we know your grief will ease and may your hearts heal and your vigilance will keep your kitties safe...
